Viking Games

October 17-19, 2008

Camp Daniel Morgan at Hard Labor Creek State Park,
Knox Chapel Rd. in Rutledge, GA

Come one, come all, and join the Barony of Bryn Madoc in a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Olympic Games with a Viking twist!

It's not as far-fetched as you may think. When the Norse settled Iceland it was established as a commonwealth, ruled in parliament by the appointed chiefs. During the summer months an Allthing was convened at Thingvellir, wherein the laws were argued, lawsuits were settled, and personal conflicts were resolved. It was also a place where the people of the island met to trade and to compete in simple contests. At this event we will be holding contests of martial, athletic, and artistic skill.

ACTIVITIES

At Viking Games we will be holding contests of martial, athletic, and artistic skill.

THOR'S GAMES
Come and appease Thor, the god of war, with your acts of valor and courage upon the field of battle. Four scenarios await to test the skill of your sword, your spear, and your axe. Pass through the dreaded Danish Pentathalon and earn your place amongst the honored Einheriar in Valhalla.

MAGNI'S GAMES
Magni, the god of strength, calls the strong of arm, the fleet of foot, and the keen of eye to compete for gold in contests of strength, speed and agility. Wrestle your opponent off his feet in the Glima. Fly like the wind in the foot race. Heave Thor's mighty Mjolnir, the unliftable hammer. Prove your skill with the throwing axe. Display your might by lifting stones.

BRAGI'S GAMES
Bragi, the god of verse and patron of the arts, call the skilled hands of the land to compete in contests of weaving, spinning, and braiding. Let your fingers fly at the inkle weaving race, or set your spindle whirling at the drop spinning contest. Anchor your long ship with the rope from the braiding contest. Show your wit and composing skills at our poetry contest.

Speed Inkle Weaving. After allowing the contestants to warp their looms, each weaver will have 30 minutes to weave the longest piece of high quality trim that they can. Contestants will be judged on the length and quality of their trim. Loaner looms and some rug weight cotton yarn will be provided.

Drop Spinning Competition. Come out and show off your spinning skills! Each spinner will have 30 minutes to spin the longest piece of yarn that they can using a drop spindle. Contestants will be judged on the length and quality of their yarn. Loaner spindles and roving will be available.

Bayeaux Stitch Embroidery. Come see the needles flash in the sun! Each contestant will have a figure from the Bayeaux tapestry to embroider using the Bayeaux stitch. They will have 30 minutes to stitch. Contestants will be judged by the completeness of their piece and the quality of the piece. Linen with pre-printed figures and some wool yarns will be provided.

Viking Rope Braiding. Find a partner who can help toss the bobbins in a lively rope braiding competition. Each team will have 20minutes to braid as long a rope as possible. We will provide the rope, bobbins etc. along with lessons. Teams that have at least 1 child under the age of 16 will get bonus points.

Poetry Competition. Each bard will have 1 hour to compose a poem in the style of either the Vikings or the Saxons (you will find out which at the event). The topic will be assigned on site! A cheat sheet for the required form will be provided.

Sweet Mead Competition. Come join in the annual Baroness' Sweet Mead Competition. She likes her mead sweet so bring your best and try to please her palate. The winner receives pottery made by the hand of the Baroness herself.

LOKI'S GAMES
Time permitting, even Loki, the god of chaos and mischief, will have his due. Silly games to entertain all ages (hosted by Sir Fiachna) will include the sheep relay race, a three legged race, children's horse race (with adult mounts), and possibly an eating contest. (Pickled herring anyone?)

THE MARKET
Do you have wares you with to sell or trade at the Allthing? Bring them. A blanket market shall be set up for all the people of the land to market their goods. Sell the products of your labors. Part with things you no longer need. Pass on those ancient SCA treasures you've had since Bearkiller was first King ... please.
